with a 45-minute lunch break

Registration Fee for Each Workshop: $169 per person and $152 per person for a group of 10 or more

 

 

Workshop Outline

  • Target the thinking that students must execute when reading any text.
  • Reveal to students that their thinking must also be communicated in writing.
  • Advance students beyond making single-text inferences to generating multi-text syntheses.
  • Raise the rigor to read multiple texts and compose extended responses—all in one sitting.

  • Writing Topics:  Write about what you know, Generate ABC Chart topics, Write for different purposes, Write to an audience
  • Setting Expectations:  Define “workshop”, Outline sharing time/author’s chair, Hold writer conferences
  • Creating Notebooks:  Introduce the writer’s notebook, Establish procedures
  • Motivating Writers:  Initiate a Done List, Make space to revise
  • Developing Spelling:  Use environmental print, Introduce word charts, Stretch words in 3 steps
  • Introducing the Six Traits:  Conduct a trait introduction, Build a yearlong visual display
  • Building Rubrics: Build a drawing rubric

  • Start the First Station:  Create a Classroom Library, Identify expectations, Practice procedures
  •  Add the Second Station:  Introduce partnered fluency work, Practice partner fluency, Manage transitions
  • Plan an Additional Station: Introduce word-work games, Work on words, Incorporate a Listening Station, Write about the reading
  • Put It All Together: Shift from procedures to practice, Troubleshoot issues, Plan for grades

  • The Big Picture:  Deliver 3 types of instruction, Execute 3 phases per lesson
  • Logistics & Preparation Compile student data, Adjust expectations
  • Tools & Activities:  Document the Thinking Voice, Retell & summarize ideas, Apply fluency and word work
  • Book Clubs:  Engage readers in Book Clubs, occasionally, Hold introductory meetings, Meet multiple times with each Book Club  
  • Teacher’s Role:  Schedule small-group meetings, Adjust the level of instructional support, Establish organization, Choose texts deliberately
