Morning- Phonics Focused Guided Reading
Participants will learn how to group students for small group reading lessons by phonics skill from diagnostic
assessments or by reading level from a running record. We'll learn how to select appropriate texts for structured phonics-focused guided reading lessons and the difference between a leveled text and a decodable text and the purpose of each. We'll learn the decodable truth about most "sight words" and the three most essential building blocks of "the code" students need in order to read. We will prioritize print-focused teacher prompts and what teachers should say to students when they get stuck on a word,
coaching students to read, not guess, at tricky spots.
(Materials to Bring: whiteboard, pen, eraser, sticky notes, & 5 math counters - This PD is appropriate for
any teacher with readers at the K-2 reading level, regardless of the grade you teach.)
Afternoon -Writer's Workshop
Participants will learn about the different components of Writer's Workshop, an instructional framework for direct & explicit writing skills & strategy instruction honoring teacher and student's voice and topic choice. Writer's Workshop is not telling students WHAT to write, it's teaching students HOW to write. Learn how to prep your classroom before you begin Writer's Workshop, an overview of the K-2 and 3-5 writing process, how to use mentor texts for teaching students author's craft in Personal Narratives, Informational Texts & Opinion
Writing/Literary Essays. Learn strategies to help your students overcome the Generating Ideas Stage and teach them where writing ideas come from.
(Materials to Bring: We will write during the PD so bring a notebook and a pen. Please also bring one fiction picture book, fiction chapter book, and one informational picture book - this PD is appropriate for K -5)
