As teachers and leaders see the enactment of social-emotional intelligence in schools they are also running into how teachers are paying more attention to the role that race, class, and culture play in social-emotional learning. Teachers not only need extensive professional development on social-emotional Intelligence (SEL) and culturally responsive teaching (CRT), they need strong leadership in their buildings who embrace this work whole-heartedly and who are themselves “self-aware.”
In this workshop participants will engage in discussion about “how to” lead or facilitate discussions of culturally relevant pedagogy and strategies they can use in their own classrooms immediately to build real and relevant relationships with culturally diverse students. Participants will walk away with practical strategies they can implement in their own classrooms or share with their school or grade level teams.
Strategies that will be covered:
- Building real and relevant relationships with and between students of different cultures
- Creating the classroom conditions for learning and respect
- Leading conversation of race and culture using data
- Establishing a culturally responsive framework for defining CRT in our classrooms and schools
- Using data to drive culturally responsive teaching (in our schools and in our grade level teams)
- Establishing protocols for discussing what we value in culturally responsive teaching practices versus the frequency by which we enact those practices.

- Schools, school leaders, and teachers who struggle with how to talk about culture and diversity in their schools, who shy away from or disengage in conversations about race, culture, identity, poverty, etc.
Ignacio Lopez, Ed.D. is Dean of the College of Professional Studies and Advancement at National Louis University in Chicago, Illinois. He has been a CPS high school English teacher, curriculum administrator, tenured professor, assistant dean, and community college president. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Chicago’s Humboldt Park
neighborhood, he is a proud graduate of the Chicago Public Schools. Lopez's leadership and research have focused on culturally responsive teaching and school-community engagement. Professional successes include implementing teacher-leadership teams focused on evidenced-based collaborative planning and the culturally relevant teaching “gaps” in a school’s curriculum and pedagogical practices. Lopez holds an Ed.D. in educational psychology with a focus on human learning and development and a master of arts degree in teaching, both from National Louis University, and a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
