Jennifer Serravallo: Understanding Texts & Readers: Supporting Student Comprehension
October 29th, 2019, 9:00am - 3:00pm | Bobak's Signature Events

Jennifer Serravallo -

Understanding Texts & Readers: Supporting Student Comprehension

"Comprehending what you've read is the goal of reading,” posit Allington and Gabriel (2012) and yet comprehension assessment and instruction can be one of the most challenging things for teachers to achieve comfort and confidence. With a focus on goals, skills, and strategies, participants will understand how knowing some hallmarks of leveled texts can help them norm expectations for student written and verbal responses to fiction and nonfiction texts. Jen will explain the role of knowing students completely and deeply in order to support their comprehension and match them to texts they'll love and understand. Finally, participants will learn how knowing about texts and readers can help teachers to support student growth using a variety of teaching structures, including conferences and small groups.

This training is appropriate for grades K-8.

After graduating from Vassar College, I moved to New York City and began teaching in a Brooklyn public elementary school. After a few years, I taught in a school close to Teachers College on the Upper West Side and began learning from TCRWP staff developers and working towards an MA at Teachers College, Columbia University.  During this time I also taught graduate and undergraduate courses at Teachers College and Vassar College.

Until 2012, I was a Senior Staff Developer at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, where I spent eight years helping urban, suburban, and rural schools implement exceptional literacy instruction through reading and writing workshops. Since then, I’ve continued consulting with schools, speaking at state and national conferences, and traveling the country presenting workshops.
