OH, THE MATH THEY WILL KNOW — PRIMARY MATH GAMES
Are you looking for engaging and effective ways to help your primary students gain confidence and competence with key math concepts? Come prepared to play math games that incorporate the use of cards, dice, multi-sided dice and new math shakers.
Concepts Covered Include:
- Strategies for building number sense, counting, subitizing, comparing numbers to 10, 20, 100, 1000
- Operations – addition and subtraction strategies including doubles, make ten, count on, associative commutative properties
- Building Fluency for both single and multi digit operations
- Place value concepts including number line strategies
You’ll have the opportunity to play each game, learn how to differentiate the activities, how to develop math journal and math talk extensions, and how to integrate problem solving strategies and assessment opportunities. Student samples, game boards, ideas for whole and small group instruction will be provided throughout. Interspersed
throughout will be practical ideas on classroom organization and management to ensure effective implementation of games as a teaching strategy. Come prepared to play!
PLAY ON WORDS: PRIMARY LITERACY GAMES
Come play literacy games that incorporate the use of easily found literacy manipulatives including dice, cards, letter tiles and more. Games are easy to differentiate and integrate into your literacy program; whole class or perfect for small differentiated group centers. The ideas are also easily transferable to literacy backpacks for home!
Concepts Covered Include:
- Introducing the alphabet and its sounds, letter matching activities
- Building rhyme for early literacy success
- Vocabulary – enriching our students spoken and writing vocabulary
- Exploring and spelling simple CVC words
- Learning about the vowels, double vowels and working with multi-syllable word
- Word Play with all kinds of words – learning about homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms
Participants will receive an extensive handout with game boards, see many student samples including ELL work, journal masters and more. Classroom and resource management will be provided throughout. Come prepared to play and experience the power of using games for bringing literacy concepts to life for your primary students.
For K – 2 Grade teachers, teacher assistants, special ed and after school program staff, curriculum coordinators, teacher coaches. This is great timing for teachers to plan summer school programs and also to PLAN for solid implementation for the 2018-19 school year!
Jane Felling is the author of the award winning Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks series and has been a leader in the area of games as a teaching strategy for over 30 years. She has been a featured speaker at the National ASCD Teaching Excellence and National conferences, National NCTM and Regional conferences as well as hundreds of state conferences. She has worked with many districts across North America during her consulting career. Her research for her masters was in the area of game instruction theory and she continues to teach K - 8 and special education as part of her contracts. She is passionate about helping teachers with implementing engaging and effective teaching strategies and is known for her high energy presentation style.
