USE EMPATHY INTERVIEWS TO:

  • DEVELOP COMMUNITY
  • IMPACT CHANGE FROM WITHIN
  • LEVERAGE YOUR STAFF TALENTS
  • FIND SOLUTIONS IN YOUR SCHOOL
  • ENHANCE YOUR SCHOOL'S CONTEXT
  • REFLECT AND EXPAND PEER PRACTICE
  • IDENTIFY USES OF EXISTING RESOURCES

Day 1: Empathy Interviews 101: The What and Why

In this first of three sessions, participants will learn about the essentials of empathy interviews, specifically what an empathy interview is and how it’s distinguished from other methods of gathering qualitative data; why they are an effective leadership tool in schools; essential elements in setting up the interview to build trust and support honesty; and how the Design Thinking Process – beginning with empathy interviews – can be used in schools. School leadership will be contextualized in terms of being designed to meet the needs of those served in the school
community.   Click to View Day 1 Objectives and Program

Day 2: Empathy Interviews 102: Practical Experience Using Empathy Interviews

Participants will engage in hands-on training in the use of the Empathy Interview Pathway. We’ll dig deeper into the specifics of setting up the interview; how to establish norms and understanding of confidentiality and use of the information; and ways to build trust and comfort in holding space for the interviewee. Participants will then observe and reflect on a trainer-led fishbowl demonstration of an empathy interview before gaining practical experience conducting an empathy interview, capturing notes from an interview, and synthesizing information gleaned from an interview.   Click to View Day 2 Objectives and Program

Day 3: Empathy Interviews 103: Action Planning for Use of Empathy Interviews

Participants will reflect on their experience conducting empathy interviews (homework) and share that reflection with one another. We’ll shift to discuss various implementation models and data analysis options with the focus being on each participant fleshing out an action plan to implement following the conclusion of the series. Time in session will be spent identifying who to interview and why; when to conduct interviews; who else needs to be included in the process; how the data will be analyzed; and how to determine concrete next steps following empathy interviewing. Finally, participants will run through a protocol to gain feedback on their action plan and modify based on ideas gleaned through collaboration.   Click to View Day 3 Objectives and Program
