Harness the Power of ENGAGING LESSON DEVELOPMENT through NGSS
Does your NGSS implementation need a Reboot?
Leverage this robust national movement to construct vibrant learning environments for students in all areas. This INTERACTIVE AND HANDS-ON course invites teachers at all levels to consider: What are the Next Generation Science Standards, and what does an NGSS-aligned classroom look like? Engage in a model activity that contrasts an NGSS-aligned lesson with traditional science classroom practices.
Rethink to:
- learn the structure of NGSS
- find standards for your specific grade
- know where to find materials related to the NGSS
- leave with an understanding of the structure of the NGSS
- understand if teaching or curricula are aligned with the current standards
- consider ways to shift your current teaching to better align with the NGSS
Who Should Attend?
K12 teachers who would like to gain a better understanding of what the NGSS is all about. This is an introductory-level course.
Meet Jeff Spencer
As a classroom teacher, Jeff was interested in learning about making science engaging, relevant, and accessible for all students. He was a high school science teacher in Aurora, Colorado during the adoption of the NGSS and served in many ways to design NGSS-aligned activities, train and support teachers in using NGSS principles in their classrooms, and consider how science can relate to issues in students’ everyday lives. He is active with NSTA,
the POGIL project, AMTA, PBLworks, OpenSciEd, and is a fellow with the Knowles Teacher Initiative. Currently, Jeff supports K12 teachers as a science instructional coach through the IL ROE #17 and is a researcher with the University of Michigan, collaborating to design resources that support civic and community engagement through science activities.
